By West Kentucky Star Staff
ALMO, KY - Officers checking on a woman who didn't show up for work arrested a man on charges of holding her against her will.

According to the Calloway County Sheriff's Department, deputies went to a home in Almo to conduct a welfare check on a woman who hadn't shown up for work. The woman's co-workers requested someone check on her because they said there had been previous reports of domestic violence.

When the sheriff and a captain knocked on the door, there was no answer. Based on the circumstances, officers entered the home anyway, and immediately heard a scream for help. The woman was found and the sheriff says she being held against her will by her estranged husband, 40-year-old Dardis Shane Markham, who was immediately arrested.

Deputies said Markham had come to the home in the early morning hours, armed with a flare gun and a butcher knife. After being held against her will for several hours, the woman said she briefly escaped but was recaptured and taken back into the home. Markham reportedly held his hand over the woman's mouth when the sheriff arrived, but she managed to yell for help when they got inside the home.

Markham was out on bond from a previous assault on the woman, and had been ordered to stay away from her and the home.

He was charged with kidnapping, burglary, wanton endangerment, intimidating a witness, terroristic threatening, assault (domestic violence), violation of conditions of release, and for possession of methamphetamine, marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Markham was taken to Calloway County Jail.
