Ramage Jumps Back in Graves County Sheriff's Race
By West Kentucky Star Staff
MAYFIELD - Less than a week after announcing he was dropping out of the Graves County Sheriff's race, Chief Deputy Davant Ramage has thrown his hat back in the ring.

Last Wednesday, Ramage announced he was withdrawing from his write-in campaign for Graves County Sheriff, because he had learned that current sheriff Dewayne Redmon was seeking re-election and it was never Ramage's intention to run against his boss. Since Wednesday, Ramage says he's been bombarded by people in the community asking him to run.

“The response has been overwhelming,” Ramage said. “I couldn't begin to tell you how many people have called, texted or spoke to me in person over the last week, encouraging me to get back in the race.”

So on Monday, Ramage re-filed as a write-in candidate.

“Let's be honest, our current sheriff has been indicted on a felony charge, and won't be able to finish his term if elected, and the other write-in candidates don't have the experience necessary to be sheriff,” Ramage said. “By not running, I would be leaving the county in a mess and I don't want to do that.”

Redmon recently entered a not guilty plea to charges of official misconduct and first degree possession of a controlled substance. Redmon was indicted on those charges in August, and is accused of stealing hydrocodone from the sheriff department's drug drop box.

A judge has ruled that Redmon can continue to perform his administrative duties as sheriff, but can't perform any law enforcement duties until his case has ended.

“Dewayne has done a great job as sheriff, and I hope he gets the help he needs, but he is no longer fit to be sheriff," Ramage said. "This county deserves better. The citizens of Graves County deserve someone they can trust and believe in.”

Three other men have filed as write in candidates: Robin Holmes, Michael Corey Apperson and Bill Howard Harris. The deadline for write-ins to file is Oct. 26 at 4:00 pm.
